Health and Safety

Anyone volunteering for gardening or litter picking should be aware of the following.

Everyone should think about safety - of themselves and other peole.

Please ensure you continue to follow all covid-19 hygiene and social distancing measures.

When litter picking - avoid:

  • Potentially hazardous objects such as unidentified cans or canisters, oil drums and chemical containers.

  • Sharp objects such as broken glass and disposable BBQs – should be collected in separate containers, not litter bags.

  • Clinical waste such as needles/syringes – inform the organiser and arrange for safe disposal.

  • Working alone – try to stay in sight and earshot of others but if not possible then let someone know where you’ve gone and when to expect you back.

To avoid illness from poor hygiene, all those taking part in gardening or litter picking must:

  • Observe social distancing with fellow volunteers and members of the public

  • Wear protective gloves at all times

  • Cover any cuts (however minor) with surgical tape or a waterproof plaster

  • Keep hands away from mouth and eyes while litter-picking or gardening

  • Wash hands and forearms before eating, drinking, smoking or going to the toilet.

When using gardening tools

  • Be aware that the public are using the park all the time that you are there.  Tools may go missing and small children can appear from nowhere!  Keep your tools close to you at all times, and remember to take away all the tools that you brought.

  • Be particularly careful of how you leave the tools which you are not currently using.  e.g. rakes must not be left with teeth upwards, forks and hand forks are best left upright with prongs in the soil, shears should be left with the ends pointing downwards.
